Toxic Touchups: The Hidden Dangers in Makeup

London Islamic School

This project explored how makeup, especially when it’s old, can affect the microbes on our skin and overall skin health. In this study, girls aged 8 to 14 were surveyed about when they started using makeup and what they knew about harmful ingredients. Regularly used makeup products were identified by this age group, and the effects of these commonly used products on skin were tested. Several tests showed that both new and used makeup allowed bacteria to grow and affected how skin cells behave, but old makeup was more harmful. It caused cells to move in unusual ways, slowed the healing of wounds, and even damaged DNA. One test also showed changes in genes that help control cell death. Since many young people use makeup without knowing the risks, this project helps raise awareness and shows why stronger safety rules for cosmetics are needed.
